We look forward to an exciting semester!Toby Hattenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10308138100836171369noreply@blogger.comBlogger31125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5973637977202812817.post-37916328362674339862013-05-01T07:47:00.005-04:002013-05-01T07:47:45.283-04:00Planting our seeds! by Eli<br />
In this post Eli will be taking us through the process of planting our seeds.<br />
<br />
In the first picture, you can see that the teacher laid out on a table
all the vegetables that we can grow outside in our garden plots. Some of
the vegetables available included carrots, beets, garlic, and all sorts
of beans. All the vegetables did have certain things in common, like
how far apart the seeds needed to be placed between one another, and how
many days it would take to maturity. Some of the vegetables needed
special treatment, like the peppers have to start indoors until
germination is done.
<br />
<br />

<br />In picture two you can see numerous things going on with everyone's
gardens. Alex and Dustin are already getting started planting the seeds
they want in their plot. They are approximating the exact space each
seed needs in order to grow properly. I can be seen in the picture
overlooking my finished rows on my plot, with trenches in between in
order to prevent flooding. Mhaya can be seen using a hoe to finish of
her rows. Jacob can be seen using a watering pot to water his plot and
to give the seeds he just planted the nutrients they need to grow.<br />

late start this year due to the chilly March and April we have had. However, in
our first post of the year I will introduce you to the garden before we let the students describe their farming methodology. We hope you enjoy!</div>

Our spinach plant bolted (started growing very fast to reproduce before the summer arrives). After it bolted it produced seeds. The seeds were collected and we will plant them in August for our fall spinach crop. Take a look at the process below!<br />

A Village School Field Trip by Isabelle and Toby<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-indent: 0.5in;">
<span style="color: #222222; font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span style="line-height: 14px;"><i>"In August of 2011 I (Toby) applied for a field trip grant for the Village School to spend a day on an Organic Farm on the East end of Long Island. To my surprise, we were awarded the grant by Target and we just completed our trip titled "A day as an organic farmer" at the Garden of Eve in Riverhead, New York. I set out to do this because Most of my students think of Long Island as suburban sprawl, strips of shops and developments as far as the eye can see. As they head East they will arrive at an agricultural paradise, and they will be see how food is made. </i></span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;">Hello again fellow farmers! This week we have gotten a lot
accomplished, this is all very exciting and the garden is rapidly evolving into
a magnificent landscape. Here you see Ruben, Eugene and Adam making rows to
plant corn. Even thought we already had corn planted, unfortunately we jumped
the gun and planted them too early so the weather was too cold for them to
live. ): We hope that these corn plants grow to be beautiful and yummy for us
to nibble on! :D </span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
The Village School Farm has been given Apple Trees! Not just any apple tree but a Dwarf Red Delicious and Dwarf mixed variety tree! We were lucky enough to receive the donation from a parent who wanted to see our farm to fork program grow! We will now be able to include apples as one of our products to bring back into the classroom as we teach about the benefits of eating fresh fruits and vegetables in our daily lives!</div>

Enjoy the reflection on the week by Isabelle:<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBqNW2dJ_QEZuui0u965g0sWayRB5nzrpHCWZ2D0-yZN0KPpXm691gzWsyVPgGNNkv5c0pdq_DxNJkoqxxQ6ytXrWgMcOvfWMZY2G2SIiXHeMUXjR7J7I5QeAUBmPlBclZqfr8-Y8xWWM/s1600/A+Planted+pea+plant.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBqNW2dJ_QEZuui0u965g0sWayRB5nzrpHCWZ2D0-yZN0KPpXm691gzWsyVPgGNNkv5c0pdq_DxNJkoqxxQ6ytXrWgMcOvfWMZY2G2SIiXHeMUXjR7J7I5QeAUBmPlBclZqfr8-Y8xWWM/s400/A+Planted+pea+plant.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<br />
Look at these baby pea plants we just planted (left)! Were hoping they grow big and strong so we can have some yummy sugar snap peas to eat. Toby instructed us how to carefully place the plants in the ground and bury them so that they will grow to be big and strong!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOET6gSqbwBIFdWjs1BxXx0lW3Ze__5xcodET-O2vo74sLNTaJwK0e6xQch28Tqb0F3PfQh1BMKcRytwgUSuTuUhE8-hdC32ISKCpKfBbFAOQFMORCCFNhOGpN4ovYIEcbq9EyRrVubcQ/s1600/Making+Trellis+for+pea+Plant.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOET6gSqbwBIFdWjs1BxXx0lW3Ze__5xcodET-O2vo74sLNTaJwK0e6xQch28Tqb0F3PfQh1BMKcRytwgUSuTuUhE8-hdC32ISKCpKfBbFAOQFMORCCFNhOGpN4ovYIEcbq9EyRrVubcQ/s320/Making+Trellis+for+pea+Plant.JPG" width="240" /></a></div><br />
<br />
My very first trellis was a success (right)! The idea of a trellis is to have a guide for the pea plants to grow, so we train the plant to grow up the string so it can get lots of warm sunlight! Unfortunately our babies are too small to train right now but we will continue to watch them eagerly! P.S. Look at how big and juicy that cabbage plant looks!<br />

We also planted broccoli (below)! As you can see Toby was a little enthusiastic about his planting duties and got caught on the plastic fencing that surrounds our garden. We successfully planted 4 broccoli plants even with the difficulties Toby ran into that day! I can’t wait to taste the fresh broccoli when it’s ready!<br />

Look at this amazing salad our class made (below)! We have such an abundance of greens in our garden that we have been making scrumptious salads for the past two weeks! Although veggies aren’t exactly the first thing on every kids favorite food list, everyone loved the salad! We plan on making pizza soon, so sit tight and wait for the updates on the garden and our cooking next week!-Isabelle<br />

We have broken ground on Monday March 19th! This early start was due in large part to the mild winter and early spring!<br />
The Farming Course this spring is called "Microfarming"<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqJTAIXx16-xKAQkqWsqiDANJME_CNRCKur28kBByO1koxKYpMjsgeODMLPdF2o6CT4zhyGxfAeg6r6Y1b0hLJUnvSn6zp1lMHC2RlwUsZujwCNKHh_zdFtDP5w00t2y6kd7-QnzwfGKo/s1600/IMG_1721.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqJTAIXx16-xKAQkqWsqiDANJME_CNRCKur28kBByO1koxKYpMjsgeODMLPdF2o6CT4zhyGxfAeg6r6Y1b0hLJUnvSn6zp1lMHC2RlwUsZujwCNKHh_zdFtDP5w00t2y6kd7-QnzwfGKo/s320/IMG_1721.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>The Microfarming Course is a ½ year Science/Practical Arts Elective Course at the Village School. The course will examine microfarming through authentic microfarming experiences (challenges) including, window farms, greenhouses, hoophouses, raised beds, container farming, and through traditional back-yard farming. To do this we will examine the basics of botany, organic agriculture, composting, the locavore movement, and the food habits of the United States consumer.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTFkulbWE33ywaDnPA4Xkz3uI5QAMi25CDS4z6tYNjfkgWWllPcErRBcdNjt3HuKAQggFXo16VRDbokQu5GVWSRp29W7pY6f3Vva51GPlquuyylwa0l7Xl4eWNkl3MkEVnU9uMtbCq5pI/s1600/IMG_1739.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTFkulbWE33ywaDnPA4Xkz3uI5QAMi25CDS4z6tYNjfkgWWllPcErRBcdNjt3HuKAQggFXo16VRDbokQu5GVWSRp29W7pY6f3Vva51GPlquuyylwa0l7Xl4eWNkl3MkEVnU9uMtbCq5pI/s320/IMG_1739.JPG" width="240" /></a>During the semester students will be working to build and maintain a sustainable Village School microfarm, both inside, outside and in-between! During these microfarming experiences we will record useful data and perform a variety of experiments. At the end of the semester students will present the results from their most scientifically significant experiment. By the end of the course students will have learned how to maintain an efficient microfarm for aesthetics or as a supplementary fresh food source.<br />
<br />
The large-scale goal is to produce enough produce for the graduation party in June, to donate to local foodbanks, and to sell at a Village School Farmers Market!<br />
<br />
Stay tuned for student Blog entries about their gardening adventures!<br />

Were working on our garden and making sure we have lots of yummy treats for the fall! Joey has come up with an ingenious invention too, called the "seed shaker" so that we can spread the seeds out more evenly when planting. Now we are clearing out the third section of the garden to plant more yummy treats! Hopefully by the end of the fall we'll have an exciting and plentiful harvest for you!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><br />

So far we have planted kentucky wonder beans, cabbage, romaine lettuce, red leaf lettuce, and baby leaf spinach already! The class is working hard to bring the garden back to life, so while we are weeding we are also composting! The compost will help us make the soil rich with nutrients so that we can plant even more yummy vegetables and fruit! <tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Detail on Peas</td></tr>
</tbody></table>Well, it's time for me to go. The school year is drawing to a close but- the garden still grows on.<br />
<br />
Recently, we've harvested some sugar snap peas. You can pick them right off the vine and chew away! Tastes beautiful and fresh, and would taste even better in a salad or stirfry. The carrots have grown large and huge, hopefully in a week or two they'll be large and pretty. We've planted pumpkin, squash, and watermelon for fall/summer harvest, and Toby plans to show off our work at graduation with a salad.<br />
<br />
It's been a blast writing the blog and working at the garden. I would suggest for anyone interested in tasting good food and saving a lot of money to do some gardening. With our little plot we have easily made a pound of veggies or more, and that is only in a month or so time. During the summer we'll be planting corn, and the tomatoes will come to fruition, adding to our insanely productive semester.<br />
<br />
<br />
It was a surprise that the peas grew so well and tasty. They grip the trellises like two lovers under the sun, embracing to seek the day. The strawberries have done coming to fruition, but the plant still thrives- possibly next year we'll have more flowers, and more plants, and more strawberries! The same happens to peas and carrots and all the other plants, it's amazing how sustainable a package of seeds could be. The future looks bright for our little garden.<br />
<br />
Regards,<br />
Lisa<br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Jeff spent most of the preparing, with slicing up the lettuce into manageable bits and adding in some fresh strawberries for a bit of sweetness to counterbalance the natural bitter aftertaste in green leafy veggies. This can be eaten with light Italian dressing or no dressing at all, it tastes fresh and natural even without the added flavor dressing would provide. To the right we have Lisa preparing the radishes. They have to be sliced thinly, then added with salt, pepper, and whatever chili sauce you'd like to add that extra kick! Be sure to add some olive oil or butter to the pan to give it some extra flavor and to keep it from sticking. Afterwards, put the radishes at the oven at 150 degrees, and keep it until they are lightly golden and crispy! Careful- they're hot!<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Seen here, plant surrounded by people like mothers to a newborn baby.</td></tr>
</tbody></table> We just opened up the Topsy Turvey, vertical planter. As its name states, the goal of a Topsy Turvey's is designed to produce more fruit from being upside down. The first step is to plant the tomato plant at the bottom and fill the device with soil, so that the plants are forced to live in a state of inertness before they find out that their roots go against gravity. This doesn't kill or weaken the plant at all, and in fact they start growing to the sun almost immediately!<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Topsy Turvey hidden from view. Not seen: Toby drilling a hole to hang it from. BZZZZZZZZ...</td></tr>
</tbody></table> Make sure to moisten the soil before adding it, so that the roots have plenty of nutrients to grow as they try to figure out what just happened to their world of roots down, plant up. However, unlike most things with brains, these plants figured out how to thrive upside-down within two or three days. Pretty adaptable! How would you like it if you had suddenly found yourself living upside-down? <br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

</tbody></table> It takes a team to make a strong topsy turvey! This thing weighed at least forty to fifty pounds. Here Amanda is carrying the device while Lisa is preparing another plant for the trauma of an upside-down living space. With water, the thing weighed even more! <br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">There are only six plants added, despite at least nine holes. </td></tr>
</tbody></table>The end result...A topsy turvey full of fruit in a month or so! Here we have two Japanese eggplant plants, two strawberry plants, and two cherry tomato plants. They've adapted quite well, despite the struggles to shove them in a world of vertigo. Hopefully they'll be living a world where people walk on the green ceiling without a problem!<br />
